Thermal Stratification and Temperature Variation in Horizontal Electric Water Heaters: A Characterisation Platform

چکیده

Electric water heaters, which have the capacity to act as thermal energy storage, are well suited demand management strategies in smart grid applications. However, finding balance between managing power load, reducing losses, user’s convenience, and bacterial growth control, requires accurate modelling of internal dynamics tank, including stratification. As a black box, this unknown is dependent on multitude environmental factors (e.g., ambient temperature inlet temperature), draw patterns, scheduling, set temperatures orientation vessel. The latter affects stratification variation inside therefore has direct bearing balancing management. Although been assessed vertically oriented tanks, what happens horizontal variety—ubiquitous developing countries—is currently left guesswork. In paper, we present development an embedded hardware software platform with variations heater can be characterised under numerous usage conditions. importance doing so highlighted by preliminary results, clearly show expected substantial along vertical axis, but also interesting phenomena longitudinal transverse axes, for both static (no draw) dynamic (with We conclude highlighting potential further research.

Load Control Strategies for Electric Water Heaters with Thermal Stratification

This semester project investigates strategies aimed at controlling the aggregate power demand of large groups of domestic electric water heaters. An existing model of a single electric water heater that considers thermal stratification along the height of the hot water tank was tuned and verified using experimental data. The tuned model was then incorporated into an existing model of a water he...

Optimal Scheduling Strategy for Domestic Electric Water Heaters Based on the Temperature State Priority List

With the rapid growth of thermostatically controlled loads, active power fluctuation and peak demand growth within an autonomous micro-grid become serious problems. This paper tries to suppress power fluctuation and shave peak demand for a micro-grid through optimizing domestic electric water heaters (controllable load). In this paper, domestic electric water heater models are first built to op...

Retrofitting Conventional Electric Domestic Hot Water Heaters to Solar Water Heating Systems in Single-Family Houses—Model Validation and Optimization

System cost reductions and development of standardised plug-and-function systems are some of the most important goals for solar heating technology development. Retrofitting hot water boilers in single-family houses when installing solar collectors has the potential to significantly reduce both material and installation costs. In this study, the TRNSYS simulation models of the retrofitting solar...

Optimization of the PCM-integrated solar domestic hot water system under different thermal stratification conditions

Many researchers have investigated how to increase the overall efficiency of solar-driven thermal systems. Several key parameters, such as collector efficiency and storage tank characteristics, may impose some constraints on the annual solar fraction (ASF) of such systems. In this paper, the behaviour of integrating the phase change material (PCM) in SDHW systems is modelled and optimized n...
